2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Follows Mixed Response
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the necessity for a more defined direction.
Ismailer expressed that the team is now refining the project with a renewed focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
This announcement follows a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock development group.
Here is the entire content from the president's announcement:
Dear Team—
I know you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a clearer identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to consideration and overhauled the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its promise to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the latest Lead of the team. After a period of discussions, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most popular titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving him next week. We are all looking forward to keep observing the development of the game in the weeks to come.
The President

Game Details and Vision
The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 in conjunction with a early access event. At the time, the developers portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary explains. "Challenge the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and tests that change every match. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, put it on the line, and hope your squad can secure victory? The option is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced release date or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as creation advances.
